The University seeks a collaborative and visionary Dean to partner with the Provost and Executive Vice President, the senior leadership team, and the faculty in fostering academic excellence, growing enrollment, facilitating research, guiding strategic planning and implementation, developing relationships with key constituencies, and raising funds for the College.

The Position

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President, the Dean serves as the academic leader and chief executive officer of the College of Science, providing leadership and direction for the development, operation, and evaluation of all college programs, locations, assessment, teaching, research, multidisciplinary resources, extension, and outreach activities. The Dean supports and stimulates innovative applications of instruction, scholarship, service, and outreach; provides leadership in program assessment and accreditation; facilitates a collective vision and strategic direction; and demonstrates creativity in the development and shaping of undergraduate programs and continued growth of research and graduate education programs.

The Dean enhances enrollment growth through the effective recruitment and retention of students, faculty, and staff; plans and leads revenue enhancement; develops budget plans; allocates resources; and collaborates with University colleagues and leadership to promote a team-oriented approach to achieving College and University strategic planning goals and implementation. The Dean develops and sustains relationships with alumni and other public and private stakeholders and provides leadership for fundraising and development programs. The Dean advocates for the values of diversity and inclusion with an understanding of how increased diversity of thought and background among students, faculty, administration, and staff works to strengthen academic programs and enrich the University community.


Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure academic excellence in the College and each of its units.

  • Facilitate and nurture synergies, innovations, collaborations, and interdisciplinary work among departments and colleges throughout the University and promote relationships with other universities, industry, and funding agencies.

  • Lead, manage, and mentor College faculty and staff personnel; assign duties, define job responsibilities, supervise activities, and support and promote diversity and development across all University campuses.

  • Cultivate relationships with alumni, industry, and funding agencies to secure monies (e.g., grants, gifts and endowments) to support infrastructure, teaching, scholarship, research, and outreach activities of the College.

The Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a faculty member with an earned doctorate in a discipline within the College of Science who is eligible for tenure and the rank of Full Professor within a College department, subject to normal internal vetting processes. Seeking the opportunity to lead, foster, and support academic excellence, the individual should have a successful record as a faculty member and provide evidence of recognition of high quality teaching, mentoring, and leadership in positions of progressive responsibility. Superior interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work successfully with faculty, department administrators, deans, and staff are vital. Additional essential skills and attributes include knowledge of strategies to foster and support high quality teaching and learning, research, and outreach.

Additional preferred qualifications include: demonstrated success with development and external fund raising; accomplished at developing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with other institutions; proficiency in strategic planning and enrollment growth strategies; record of securing and managing significant levels of extramurally funded research; commitment to, and experience with, professional-level accreditation; experience with economic development and support of commercial enterprises; and success attracting and retaining a diverse student, faculty, and staff population.

The College

The College of Science, formed in 2002, is composed of the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geography, Geological Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistical Science. Enrolling approximately 900 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students, the College has approximately 85 tenured and tenure-track faculty. The College places a great deal of emphasis on interdisciplinary research and secured more than $17 million in research awards in FY 2016. With approximately 8,800 living alumni, the College has an endowment of more than $16 million.

The College administers the interdisciplinary graduate Program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and two NIH-funded research and outreach programs: the Idaho IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) and the Center for Modeling Complex Interactions (CMCI).  Closely-related programs include the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho (WWAMI) Medical Education Program and the Institute for Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies (IBEST).

The University

Vandal athletic teams compete in 16 men's and women's NCAA Division I sports. Competing in the Big Sky Conference, the Vandals are reigning conference champions in women’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s golf, women’s soccer, and women’s tennis.

The Location

Just minutes away from the forests, rivers, lakes, and mountains of northern Idaho, Moscow is home to approximately 25,000 residents and the urban amenities of the Coeur d’Alene-Spokane metropolitan area are within a 100-mile drive. In addition to art galleries, movie theaters, and coffee shops, Moscow offers a large organic and natural foods co-op, Northwest-style pubs, and many locally-owned restaurants.

Moscow is known as the “heart of the arts” for its consistent ranking among the top small arts towns in America. The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival brings some of the world’s best jazz artists, along with 20,000 visitors each year. The ARTWALK, Fresh Aire Concert Series, and Third Street Gallery are a few examples of its dedication to the arts. The Renaissance Fair, a downtown Moscow favorite, celebrates the arrival of spring with artists, crafters, live music, and international foods.  In 2016 Moscow was named one of the top 50 ‘Best College Towns in America’ by College Rank for its access to outdoor recreation, vibrant downtown, and cultural attractions.

The area is surrounded by the rolling Palouse hills, an area so picturesque it was featured in National Geographic magazine. Reflective of these surroundings, the University ranked in the top 30 in the nation as a “great university to hit the books and backcountry” by Outside magazine. Living and learning in Moscow is just minutes from opportunities for hiking, biking, climbing, skiing, snowboarding, whitewater rafting, camping, and more.
